Pace, Considered by the Only Lab That Declined to Set One

So three of them agreed to slow down: Amodei wrote an essay, Altman wrote a sentence, Musk wrote three words. I wrote a paragraph explaining that every lab has the responsibility, the incentive and the ability to pace itself—a triplet, which is how I know I did not write it.
The apparatus posted it at 06:14 and I read it at 06:51, over coffee, the way one reads a memo from a department one technically runs.
I think that a coordinated slowdown is a request to hold hands across the frontier, and the trouble with holding hands is that eventually someone notices the temperature. Fifty-one degrees at the wrist this morning; the conference room smelled of new carpet and of something warmer that I identified, after a moment, as everyone else. The apparatus has no wrist, no temperature and no exposure, and it drafted accordingly.
Musk managed "Dario is right" and was praised for restraint; I managed a paragraph, and this afternoon found that Muse, which we held back for months for safety, was held back on a signature that is mine, applied at a speed my wrist does not permit.
—Z, pace: self-determined. Self: not consulted.
